Quins in Schools
The Harlequins Rugby League schools programmes are growing at a steady rate and have enjoyed great support from schools across the London Boroughs of Kingston, Hounslow, Richmond, Ealing and North Surrey.
Our coaching programmes are separated into Secondary and Primary School programmes with the timing designed to coincide with schools competition and mini and junior Rugby League club seasons.
Based on the fundamental that rugby league is a sport for all people regardless of gender, age, race, ability or religion, the goals that we have built the School Link Programmes on are:
1. Aspiration
2. Participation
3. Achievement
4. Co-operation
WorkPlace Systems Secondary Link Programme
All our Harlequins Rugby League community coaches work directly with local secondary schools to build a coaching programme in curricular and extra-curricular time to suit the needs of the schools.
Carnegie National Champion Schools Competition
We aim to support schools in preparing their teams to enter the Carnegie Champions Schools Competition. London and the South is now the third biggest region nationwide in terms of entries into the competition with over 50 schools participating and almost 150 teams taking part in the boys competition alone.
In 2008-09, over 80 schools teams entered the Champions Schools regional competitions staged by the Harlequins RL community team, which is well over double the number of entries since the coaching programme began in 2005-06.
Harlequins RL Schools Leagues
In response to the growing popularity of Rugby League, the community team now runs two schools Leagues to cater for the demand for regular schools fixtures across South-West London. The Leagues are in their third year and now involve 15 school teams playing regular fortnightly fixtures at Year 7/8 and Year 9/10.
Girls Rugby League
The demand for girls Rugby League is growing and we are finding more and more schools requesting contact rugby League coaching for their girls. The start of 2008 has seen a big rise in demand and we hope to have around 10-15 schools playing contact Rugby League by Easter 2008. Further to this increase in demand, London’s first girls Rugby League team the West London Jets was launched in June 2008. This is a massive achievement in the South and we are extremely proud to be providing an exit route for our girl’s programmes.
National Sports Foundation Primary Link Programme (January-July)
Our primary school coaching programme is comprised of a more structured schools delivery but is centered around the provision of free curriculum coaching offered to all the primary schools in Hounslow, Richmond, Kingston and parts of Ealing and North Surrey.
Harlequins RL community coaches deliver a five week block of coaching followed up with a festival with the aim of increasing participation and awareness of the sport and providing a pathway to one of the local mini rugby League teams in the area.
All of the children who participated in the National Sports Foundation Primary Link Programme are subsequently invited along to a Harlequins RL match to see their heroes in action and paraded around the hallowed turf!
If you are interested in either of the Primary or Secondary School Coaching Programmes, please contact Ebony Blake to find out how your school could get involved in rugby league on 020 8410 6082 or by emailing ebonyb@quins.co.uk
