“I actually quite enjoyed it” said Chris Melling, to the disbelief of some of his team mates.
Day three began with yet another dawn alarm call and even more press-ups, pushing each individual’s total for the week well into the thousands. After skills and drills in the morning, the players were whisked away from their barracks to the Royal Engineers boat houses on the river Medway.
Following a thorough briefing, the team then kitted themselves out with the vast array of safety clothing required for their next challenge including; thermals, bright orange waterproof suits, life jackets, helmets, goggles and gloves.
Outside waiting for them at the end of the jetty were two Combat Support Boats. Capable of up to 40 miles an hour and able to turn on a sixpence, the team had the ride of their lives racing up and down the river Medway.
After drying themselves off, the team returned to base for the ‘log run’. The squad was divided into two competing teams who set off on a lung-burning race around the all terrain circuit carrying enormous logs.
Jamie O’Callaghan said:
“Whilst it has been a very hard and very long week, we’ve had some great opportunities to experience new things. The squad is looking very tough and fit, and living together in the barrack dormitories has really brought us all together. It will all be apparent when we kick off next season that we’re a stronger, fitter and closer team.”
