David signed for Harlequins RL in December 2007 after gaining a release from the final year of his contract at Canberra Raiders. After attending school at Daniel Heckenberg’s old alma mater St Gregory’s, David played his junior rugby for Thirroul, prior to joining the St. George Illawarra club.

David made his first grade debut for the Dragons in 2003, aged 19, against Canberra. In 2005 David signed for the Raiders, becoming a starting regular in a variety of back positions. In 2007 David’s NRL season was interrupted by injury.

In 2008 David joined Quins fellow ex-Canberra players Matt Gafa and Mark McLinden in the starting line up for the seasons opening encounter at the Stoop.

A quiet, unassuming player on the pitch, David possesses classic centre skills, and during 2008 the timing of his final pass led to a number of try-scoring opportunities for the wingers playing outside him.

Howell enjoyed an outstanding season in 2009, becoming the club's top try scorer and picking up the Player's Player of the Year award at the end of the campaign. With sound defence and good attacking skills, David is an often underrated member of the Quins squad and his contributions were sorely missed during spells out of the squad through injury and suspension.
