Luke signed for Harlequins RL from National League side Doncaster in September 2008. A former junior with Middleton Moor ARLFC, Luke signed for the Leeds Rhinos Academy in 2003. In 2005 Luke was voted the Junior Academy “Players Player of the Year” and in 2006 Luke made his mark at Senior Academy level, scoring six tries in 17 appearances.

Indeed at the end of the 2007 season Luke featured in the Senior Academy Grand Final, scoring a crucial late field goal in Leeds 1-0 victory. In 2007 Luke consolidated his position in the powerful Leeds Senior Academy side; a season that concluded with a second Senior Academy Grand Final appearance. During June 2007 Luke joined National League Doncaster on loan, where he made his first grade debut for the Dons against Sheffield at the Keepmoat stadium. Luke impressed during this loan period and subsequently joined Doncaster permanently at the close of the 2007 season.

In 2008 Luke played an integral role in Doncaster’s promotion winning season; in the process smashing the club’s all-time points scoring record. Indeed such was Luke’s influence to his side in 2008 that he was voted man of the match in Doncaster’s play-off final and was also announced as National League Two “Young Player of the Year”.

Luke quickly adjusted to Super League life with Harlequins and became a regular starter in the absence of the injured Luke Dorn. At the end of his first season Gale was named Young Player of the Year at the annual Harlequins awards.
